The traditional emphasis on the application of research has established Unicamp as the Brazilian university with the closest ties to industry. In the past few years the institution has signed over 800 contracts with industries in all sectors.

The intensification in the demand for such services led Unicamp to organize the Office for Technology Transfer and, in 1994, the Center for the Encouragement of Cooperation with Business (CIPE). These today serve as a link between the university and businessmen who wish to modernize their industrial processes, bring their personnel up to date, or incorporate products developed by research at Unicamp.

In a broader sense, Unicamp has pioneered the way for uniting the efforts of research institutions with those of businessmen in various sectors for the development of an effective policy of approximation university-industry. The allocation of funds in 1991 resulted in the creation of the University-Industry Institute (Uniemp), located in São Paulo. One of the tasks of this institution is the identification of technological problems in the associated industries so that these can be channeled to appropriate research laboratories for solution. 64.jpg (167583 bytes)
