By stressing scientific inquiry, Unicamp adheres to the principle that research is also an economic activity and, as such, must be respected. This has led to the natural relationship it enjoys with industry, the easy dialogue it maintains with organs for technological advancement, and its rapid involvement in the process of production.
This involvement began in the 1970's with the development of research of great social applicability, much of which has been propagated and incorporated into the daily routine of the population. One could mention, for instance, digital telephones, the development of fiber optics and its applications in communication and medicine, the various types of lasers now available in the country, the nationally developed computer chip, and numerous technological procedures for the biological control of agricultural pests, as well as other research with tremendous future prospects such as the processing of quartz, the development of superconductors meeting international standards, and the production of nuclear energy through fusion.

In addition to these and the other thousands in progress a significant number of research projects are under way in the fields of political and social sciences, economics, education, history, humanities, and the arts. Not only are the majority of these research projects oriented towards a survey of the Brazilian reality, but many have the potential for direct application in the provision of immediate social benefits. Some have already been put into practice. On the whole, this research represents about 15% of all the research being conducted in Brazilian universities today.Operating as a genuine "research factory" and a center for the training of highly qualified professionals, Unicamp has attracted a host of hi-tech industries to the area, industries which are interested in commercializing the academic product.
