An International University

The regions shown in red indicate areas involved in cooperative accords with Unicamp

The specific weight of a university is calculated by its capacity to maintain a dialogue with the international scientific community. In the case of Unicamp, its extreme youth does not prevent its dialogue with prestigious secular institutions in Europe and America, nor does it impede the spread of its influence in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Unicamp indubitably enjoys more recognition abroad than any other Brazilian university.

The figures speak for themselves: Unicamp today has nearly 150 international accords for technical and scientific cooperation with 30 countries on four continents.

Unicamp, for example, was the first Brazilian university to establish an exchange program with Cuba, soon after the resumption of diplomatic relations. And thanks to an accord with the Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Soviets from the Lebedev Institute and Brazilians from the Institute of Physics at Unicamp have launched hundreds of balloons into the atmosphere to capture cosmic rays.

The United States, Japan, France and Italy are the countries which maintain the largest number of accords with Unicamp. The areas of greatest technical cooperation are Food Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics and Medicine.

But the cosmopolitanism of Unicamp is the result of its reality: about 10% of its professors are foreigners, usually from renowned European, American, Asian, and Latin-American universities. On the other hand, the arrival of professors and foreign students to attend regular courses at the university has become routine. These visitors account for about 5% of the total number of students at Unicamp in graduate and undergraduate programs.

The reverse is also true: each year has seen an increase in the number of faculty members of Unicamp engaged in courses of specialization in graduate or post-doctorate programs in North America and in Europe. At any given moment, from 10-15% of the professors are to be found outside the country, attending specialized courses, or even teaching them.
